Sample questions (3 of 7)

  1. Question 1

    'I speak' in French is...

    • A) Je parle
    • B) Tu parles
    • C) Il parle
    • D) Nous parlons
    Show answer

    Answer: Je parle

Regular -er verbs: drop -er, add endings. Je -e, tu -es, il/elle -e, nous -ons, vous -ez, ils/elles -ent. Parler -> je parle, tu parles, il parle, nous parlons, vous parlez, ils parlent. ~80% of French verbs are -er. Memorise this paradigm.

  2. Question 2

    'We eat' in French is...

    • A) Je mange
    • B) Tu manges
    • C) Nous mangeons
    • D) Ils mangent
    Show answer

    Answer: Nous mangeons

-er verbs: nous form is -ons. BUT 'manger' (and other -ger verbs) keeps the 'e' before -ons to maintain the soft 'g' sound: nous mangeons (not 'mangons'). Other examples: nous voyageons (we travel), nous nageons (we swim).

  3. Question 3

'They (masculine) have' in French is...

    • A) Ils ont
    • B) Elles ont
    • C) Nous avons
    • D) Vous avez
    Show answer

    Answer: Ils ont

Avoir (to have) is irregular: j'ai, tu as, il a, nous avons, vous avez, ils ont. Used in compound tenses (passé composé). 'Avoir' literally means 'to have' but used in many idioms: j'ai faim (I am hungry, literally 'I have hunger'), j'ai 15 ans (I'm 15).
