Sample questions (3 of 8)

  1. Question 1

The Islamic word for God is...

    • A) Allah
    • B) Yahweh
    • C) Brahman
    • D) Buddha
    Show answer

    Answer: Allah

Allah is simply the Arabic word for 'the God'. Muslims (+ Arabic-speaking Christians) use the same word. Allah is: the one true God (tawhid = monotheism), creator, sustainer, all-merciful, all-knowing, has 99 'beautiful names' (al-Asma' al-Husna). No physical form - cannot be depicted in art.

  2. Question 2

Tawhid is the Islamic belief in...

    • A) Many gods
    • B) The oneness of God
    • C) A trinity
    • D) No God at all
    Show answer

    Answer: The oneness of God

Tawhid is the most fundamental Islamic belief. Allah is ONE - not three persons (rejects Trinity), not many gods. Has no partners, no equals, no offspring. The opposite of tawhid is 'shirk' (associating partners with God) - the gravest sin in Islam. Shahadah (declaration of faith) starts: 'There is no god but God.'

  3. Question 3

Muhammad is described in Islam as...

    • A) A divine being
    • B) The final + greatest prophet of God
    • C) The Son of God
    • D) A god himself
    Show answer

Answer: The final + greatest prophet of God

Muhammad (c.570-632 AD) received revelations from Allah via the angel Gabriel over 23 years. These revelations became the Qur'an. He preached monotheism, justice + submission to Allah. Final prophet ('Seal of the Prophets'). Muslims venerate him deeply (saying 'peace be upon him' after his name) but NEVER worship him - that would be shirk.
