Stimulus (e.g. pin) -> receptor (skin) -> sensory neurone -> RELAY neurone (in spinal cord - doesn't go to brain, that's why it's fast) -> motor neurone -> effector (muscle) -> response (move hand). Synapses connect neurones - chemicals (neurotransmitters) cross the tiny gap.
