    Energy STORES (where energy is kept): kinetic (moving things), gravitational potential (high things), chemical (food, fuel, batteries), thermal (hot things), elastic (stretched/squashed things), magnetic, electrostatic, nuclear. Energy TRANSFERS (how energy moves): heating, electrical work, mechanical work, radiation (light, sound). Sound is a transfer mechanism, not a store.

    Kinetic energy: 0.5 x mass x velocity^2. Note v is SQUARED - doubling speed quadruples kinetic energy. That's why crashes at higher speed cause much more damage. 0.5 x 2 x 9 = 9 J. Units: J (joules). Cars: a 1000kg car at 10 m/s has 50,000 J = 50 kJ of KE.

    GPE: stored when something is raised against gravity. Formula: m x g x h (where g = 9.8 m/s^2, often 10). 5 x 10 x 2 = 100 J. When the ball falls, that GPE converts to kinetic energy. At ground level: GPE = 0, KE = 100J (ignoring air resistance). At halfway: GPE = 50J, KE = 50J. Energy is CONSERVED, just transferred.
