Simultaneous equations

AQA GCSE Maths revision on Simultaneous equations. Aligned to the AQA GCSE Mathematics 8300 specification. This bank has 16 practice questions on this topic.

Sample questions (3 of 16)

  1. Question 1

    Solve: x + y = 7 and x - y = 1. Find x.

    Show answer

    Answer: 4

    Adding the equations cancels y: (x+y) + (x-y) = 7 + 1 -> 2x = 8 -> x = 4. Substitute back: 4 + y = 7 -> y = 3.

  2. Question 2

    Solve: 2x + y = 11 and x + y = 7. Find x.

    Show answer

    Answer: 4

    Subtract the second from the first: (2x+y) - (x+y) = 11-7 -> x = 4. Then 4 + y = 7 -> y = 3.

  3. Question 3

    Solve: 3x + 2y = 16 and x - y = 2. Find y.

    Show answer

    Answer: 2

    Eliminate y: multiply x-y=2 by 2 -> 2x-2y=4. Add to 3x+2y=16: 5x = 20, x = 4. Substitute: 4 - y = 2, y = 2.
