Every noun is masculine OR feminine - you have to learn it with the noun. Most -e endings = feminine; many consonant endings = masculine. BUT exceptions everywhere - le verre (m, glass), la rue (f, street), le problème (m, problem). Always learn the article with the noun: 'un livre' not just 'livre'.
