One mole = 6.02 x 10^23 of anything (atoms, molecules, ions). The 'amount' unit of chemistry. Why this oddly-specific number? It's the number of atoms in exactly 12g of carbon-12. Convenient because the mass of 1 mole of an element in grams = its atomic mass number. 1 mol of carbon weighs 12g; 1 mol of oxygen weighs 16g; 1 mol of water weighs 18g.

Molar mass: H = 1 + 1 + O = 16 = 18 g/mol. So 18g of water = 18/18 = 1 mole. moles = mass / molar mass.
